Growing up in rural Nebraska, I never thought I would join a sorority. To be honest, I’m so glad I was wrong.
I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and pledged Chi Omega, just like my older sister. I was excited to share this experience with her and was also excited about meeting the women that would inevitably become my best friends. My sorority sisters did indeed become my dearest friends, but so did many other women who were in different sororities. I respected and admired my friends in other sororities – and to this day, that respect and admiration has only grown.
Too often sororities are pitted against each other – whether it’s during recruitment, homecoming events, Greek Week and even in philanthropic efforts. I wanted to start something that would bring women from all sororities together. I wanted to start something that celebrated sisterhood and the positive impact sorority women have on our society.
Enter Simply Sorority. While I am not, by any means, a sorority expert, I do have a passion for sisterhood. I served as Recruitment Chair during college, helped start a Baltimore alumnae chapter and served as Community Service Advisor for a sorority at Stanford University.
I am thankful for my sorority experience. It has opened the door to friendships, jobs, volunteer opportunities and…a husband! That’s right, I’m married to a fraternity alum!
In all seriousness, I hope Simply Sorority will showcase the positive side of sororities. At the same time, I hope to address real issues that real women are facing each day. Breaking down sorority stereotypes is a huge goal, but I think it can be done – so long as we sorority women come together and celebrate each other.
